Sports is the glue that keeps alumni involved. Sure, LBSU has some other stuff that alumni are interested in, like the Carpenter Center, but alumni get excited when their alma mater gets publicity from their sporting achievements. LBSU is very well situated to increase fees without suffering any change in enrollment. It may weed out a few el cheapos who would do just fine at CSDH; some financially struggling students may have to transfer and I'm sorry not everyone can be accomodated; but in the big picture, strong student support of athletics through a mandatory fee is the ONLY realistic way to fully fund our current sports. Just imagine even another $100 per semester would generate in the neighborhood of $6 million a year for athletics! Top that off with another $100 per semester for increased student activities and voila, we have some economic juice flowing into LBSU. Yeah I know, a $400 annual increase in fees right now seems insane, so I could live with a graduated increase that gets us there in 3-4 years but it has to happen NOW! Rather than taking the simplistic road of saying "no new fees" because that is so easy for the masses to swallow as the best option, FKA needs to aggressively debate that these fees are actually better in the long run for all current students and alumni.
The time is now FKA. Implement the fees starting January 2011. Time is wasting away on your watch. Believe me, alumni are watching this carefully and if you blow it, you risk being the next Maxson. Loved for educational reasons, reviled for lack of vision regarding athletics. You have a chance to have it all. GO FOR IT!
