LA Times on Burton | #1 | ||

AThe bad news is this kid is garnering alot of interest from UCLA and USC. The interesting situation is that UCLA's big hook right now is the chance to
start right away, while Ware and Anderson along with the incoming studs might make it tougher to break into the LB lineup.

Seems funny to think that he would be a freshmen starter at UCLA, but not LB. If he did come to LB, I feel we would have the best mid major recruiting class in
the nation by far. Deonta, if you wanna play in the NCAA's for four straight years come to LB, if not go to UCLA.

Don't we need a true juco center more though? | #3 | ||

It is a tough choice on the surface, given Burton's talent level.
But this team has shown all season that they desperately need an interior defensive presence, someone 6-9/6-10 who understands interior defense, if they are to succeed in the toughest BWC road games and also in the tougher OOC road games. Defense will never be TJ's forte. And Shepard will be good in time, but will need some time. What is the story with Richardson? Didn't Frank B. say he was the sleeper of the previous West Coast recruiting class across all schools? Why isn't he even playing? Granted, unlike TJ and LA, he came straight out of HS instead of going to a prep school. If they try to bring in Burton and a juco center, 2 rides for next season have to be removed. Far easier to remove 1 ride than 2. 01/03/10 11:07 AM |

Post players | #4 | ||

Polished 6'10" interior post players are rarer than diamonds. The pool of quality perimeter players is deep enough that an up and coming program like
LB can snag quality wings who can help immediately, but frankly, the shortage of ready to help post players is so dire that even name programs like UCLA often
have to take of projects(though they get ones with higher likelyhood of panning out). I believe that if DM can find a player who could step in immediately and
be a force in the paint he will find a ride, I just am not all that optimistic that that will happen. On the other hand, we have a 6'11" kid sitting
out this season due to a knee injury (Montgomery) who has the size and athleticism to develop into an interior star by his junior or senior season and I think
that with time, Richardson will develop too. And though not as big as we might like, Phelps and Robinson are a pretty effective pair of sophs.

Why are you expecting so much so fast from Kyle Richardson? The kid just turned 18. Be patient. I think I feel a rant building.

Understood that Richardson by not attending a prep school isn't going to be nearly as far along his first year as Anderson or Robinson. And it's true
that some develop faster than others. I do have to admit that I wasn't aware that Richardson just turned 18 (later than the normal true freshman does
turn 18).
Not expecting him to play 20-25 minutes a game like LA and TJ did a year ago. Just hoping he can see a little increased playing time to learn from. I can see where Frank B. would want to say what is on his mind, and it is up to each of us to interpret it as we wish. But I guess based on what Frank said, I expected a typical learning process for the first half of the season, and then more playing time as the league season progressed (maybe say 8-10 minutes/game by February). Sounds like the biggest issue right now is that he inevitably commits at least 1 foul a game just from setting an illegal screen, and that limits his time on the court. I know the foot work and execution of a screen doesn't come right away, but maybe I was expecting it to be better used after 3 months of practice. So maybe screen setting is something that comes much easier to some than to others. 01/13/10 12:36 PM |
